Depression treatment is multifaceted.
For mild to moderate depression: talk therapy (counseling) in combination with healthy body choices (like exercise, healthy diet, and adequate sleep) is shown to be very effective in relieving depression symptoms.
NOTE: Not all depression requires drug treatment.
For severe depression: if a person is severely depressed, that is their brain chemistry is so depleted that it is unable to return to a state of homeostasis on its own, drug therapy is likely necessary. If a person doesn’t have the energy to take care of their body or the clarity of mind to engage in talk therapy (counseling) then they are not going to be able to improve via those treatments. You will first have to return your brain chemistry to normal enough level that you can actually benefit from talk therapy and have the energy to engage in body self-care.
For most this will mean some course of anti-depressant treatment. Anti-depressants (SSRI’s anyways) work by slowing down the rate at which your brain recycles certain neurotransmitters. The net effect of this slowdown is to increase the availability of those neurotransmitters to your brain, thus restoring normal functioning. When a severely depressed person finds the right anti-depressant and correct dosage for their metabolism, depression symptoms (like loss of energy, hopelessness, and foggy thinking) begin to lift within a few weeks.
WARNING: Medication alone will not fix the depression.
There’s a reason you became depressed in the first place and except in rare circumstances (like seasonal depression), medication will not fix the depression. It will only help restore brain chemistry homeostasis so you can actually address the issues. All anti-depressants come with the instructions to engage in counseling along with the use of them for this very reason.
